Cherry Nightstands

This is a simple batten and stake design, heavily influenced by Christopher Schwarz’s work in the Anarchist Design Book.

These nightstands were an exercise in production and iteration. There were four sets of two, each with slightly different proportions and sizes. The challenge was to allow the flexibility to vary dimensions without sacrificing the efficiency of dupl

The legs are permanently mortised and wedged into the battens, which are in turn screwed to the tops. The slotted holes that the outer screws pass through allow for expansion and contraction of the wood.

The piece was also built with only 4/4 cherry, which I laminated to make the leg and batten stock. This was a constraint of the commission, which had a limited budget per item.
